Our Story

Mahi AI was born from our own everyday experiences using AI tools — in study, mahi, content creation, and planning. Again and again, we noticed the same patterns: recycled answers, incorrect information, hallucinated websites, and generic content that often misrepresented or ignored Māori perspectives.

It became clear to us that while AI could be a powerful tool, it wasn’t neutral — it reflected the limitations and biases of the data it was trained on. For us as rangatahi, this raised serious questions about accuracy, representation, and the potential harm to communities if decisions were being made based on flawed or inappropriate content.

MEET OUR TEAM
A group of five diverse people sitting around a table in a meeting room with laptops and notebooks, engaging in a discussion.

Rather than sit back, we decided to take action. We created Mahi AI to support businesses, organisations, and community groups to use AI safely, responsibly, and with integrity.

Group of women sitting at a table engaged in a discussion, with paper and markers in front of them; one woman is smiling, another has a face tattoo, in a room with a framed landscape picture on the wall.

Our aim is to help people understand what AI can and can’t do, and to ensure that Māori and community voices are not left out of the digital future.

As a rangatahi-led team, we bring a deep awareness of how AI is shaping our world and a strong desire to make sure it reflects who we really are, not just what the internet thinks we should be.
